Be Prepared! National Preparedness Month 2020

National Preparedness Month 2020

Don’t let September go by without doing your part for National Preparedness Month 2020! FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security have great tips for family and community disaster and emergency planning.

Prepare for Disasters and Emergencies

The most important things you can do to protect yourself, loved ones, and pets in the event of a disaster or emergency are to have a plan, an emergency preparedness kit, and signup for weather and emergency alerts that impact where you live and work.

Make a Plan – National Preparedness Month

Creating and updating your Emergency Preparedness Plan can help mitigate loss and confusion during disasters. Include your entire household in the planning process and check out Ready.gov for advice and templates that you can tailor to your specific needs.

Build an Emergency Preparedness Kit – National Preparedness Month

If a disaster was to strike today, would you have immediate access to the things you need? At a minimum, you should have:

  • Water: one gallon per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
  • Food: at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
  • Flashlights
  • First aid kit
  • Medications
  • Important Documents
  • Download the Build A Kit supply list.

Sign up for Weather and Emergency Alerts – National Preparedness Month

Make sure you sign up for the weather and emergency alerts and warnings. Learn your evacuation zone and have an evacuation route planned. Local emergency management information can be found at https://www.ready.gov/local

There’s much more information at National Preparedness Month. On any given day, anything can happen, so plan and practice. Be safe, be well, and be prepared!
